Introduction

Tatsu are the dragons of Shinto Mythology in Japan. [1] Not always creatures of destruction, the tatsu can be beneficial deities with immense power over nature. [1]

Izanami and Izanagi, together, gave birth to all the Wata-tsumi, or "Lords of the Sea," which included many of the powerful tatsu. [1]

Their associates with water and bodies of water link them to the weather, and people respected them for their ties to the rice fields and other crops. [1]
