Dragon Comparisons

Over time, I have noticed a strange connection between famous dragons of one mythology and that of another. Here I plan to compare them for further theories and research.

Apep and Quetzalcoatl
Apep was a serpent from Egyptian mythology that tried to swallow Ra, the sun god, as he passed over the Underworld in the boat of the sun. Quetzalcoatl was an Aztec and Mayan deity that sometimes appeared as the sun. It is something to note, too, that sometimes the Earth Serpent would swallow the Quetzalcoatl.

Both the Aztecs and the Egyptians had a similar reason for eclipses. Their deity that was responsible for the sun was swallowed by a serpent of some kind. In the Aztec sort, the Quetzalcoatl was swallowed by the Earth Serpent, and there was an eclipse. For the Egyptians, eclipses happened only when Ra was swallowed by Apep.

Tarasque and Gargouille
Both Tarasque and Gargouille come from French legend, but they have very similar stories. Both begin with the dragons terrorizing a nearby town area. Also, in both stories no one wishes to help save one or two courageous people.

In the stories, too, the dragon was won over by religion. The hero, or heroine, manages to make the dragon completely docile and then leads the dragon back into the town that it has been terrifying. There, the villagers kill the now dormant beast.
